On Friday, January 18th, UMS and its Grade Seven and Eight students were pleased to welcome Mr. Rob Gleeson from the Faculty of Mathematics and CEMC from the University of Waterloo.
The purpose of this visit was to give our students the opportunity of working with a Math specialist while solving engaging problems, and to see the passion and enjoyment that can develop while delving deeper into the study of Mathematics. Professor Gleeson conveyed the importance of continuing studies in the area of mathematics and computer science, as current and future employers will be looking for professionals who have key analytical and problem solving abilities who are able to work well independently, but also be able to collaborate and successfully problem solve issues with others.
Mr. Gleeson worked effectively with our students while sparking their curiosity and interests. Some key aspects of learning included: how to come up with the general formula for a given problem, individual skill development of pattern recognition, critical thinking, and multi-level problem solving strategies.
