Each week, the ME to WE enrichment gathers to brainstorm fun, innovative, and creative ideas to make a difference in the lives of many. They work collectively to achieve their goals of spreading community spirit and kindness throughout the halls of UC and within our local community. Stay tuned to Edsby for further details on the Cupid Gram Valentine campaign. Proceeds of all campaigns support the school’s partnership with ME to WE’s Pillar of Water campaign.
WE SCARE HUNGER: UC families brought in 2300 food and health items and a variety of gift card donations which were donated to our local Markham Food Bank. Students learned the importance of helping others and giving back to their local community.
WE ARE RAFIKIS: We shared the story of the Kenyan Mamas who hand bead Rafiki bracelets within their community, allowing sustainable income for their village. We are pleased to report that we have sold 235 UC customized coloured Rafikis so far. Our Rafikis will arrive in February.
WE RISE ABOVE/ BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: The message of inclusivity, spreading positivity and kindness throughout the school, and developing community relationships is key! Some of our upcoming campaigns for February include Mascot Hoodie, Cupid Grams, and Pink Shirt Day.
We celebrate many school-wide and in-class initiatives that are carrying the ‘Kindness is Contagious’ message. In several classes, teachers and students share meaningful and inspirational quotes that can be implemented within our school and local community. Principal, Mr. Treherne continues to spread the concept of kindness as he travels throughout the classes sharing stories that bring meaning and thought-provoking discussions.
In Drama classes, and several Primary grades, students have learned the intrinsic value of “Filling someone’s bucket’, based on the stories, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? and How Full is Your Bucket? ‘Bucket filling’ is a common occurrence at UC and we are proud of our students as they blossom into the best version of themselves. In the Junior and Elementary classes, many teachers take time to recognize and celebrate the small acts of kindness that they see their students demonstrating. Our Reading/Learning buddies programme allows our grade seven and eight students to develop their leadership skills while academically mentoring our younger students.
